Sheathed cables have an outer sheath made of metal and two to eight inner conductors. The insulation consists of a highly compressed metal oxide powder (preferably MgO or Al2O3).
Sheathed cables for thermocouples have inner conductors made of thermo material. Sheathed cables for resistance thermometers have inner conductors of copper, copper-nickel alloy, nickel, nickel-chrome or nickel-plated copper.
Sheathed cables are designed for the application at high temperatures and are used wherever particularly high demands exist in relation to mechanical, chemical and electrical stability.
Because of their good bending qualities, these cables are preferably also used where room is challenging and a flexible use is desired, such as in the laboratory or in pilot plants. The minimum bending radii are 3 × D (D = outer diameter of the cable).
Due to the development of rational processing methods, sheathed cables are becoming an increasingly used starting material for the production of standardised thermocouples and resistance thermometers, in particular in the field of industrial measurement and control technology as well as in automotive sensor technology.
